Church Calendar Curious

Our family has decided to be more curious about the church calendar this year. Instead of starting during Lent or Advent, we decided to start in Ordinary time. This is our second day to participate, the first was the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. (We made a fire craft. Unfortunately, there is a severe drought and we couldn’t do a bonfire like I had hoped.)

Today is June 29, 2023, the Feast of St. Peter and Paul. Since I grew up low church protestant I really don’t know how people celebrate this feast day. So I created a quick game to buzz in and decide if it was Peter or Paul. At first, my boys protested and didn’t want to play. Then they had fun cutting out the squares. Once we got started, playing the game we were all shocked and surprised when the 4 year old kept buzzing in with the correct answers!

History

A quick bit of research showed that some countries like Peru, Chile, Colombia, Malta, Vatican City and Venezuela celebrate it as a national holiday. Switzerland as regional holiday. (Source) It is one of the oldest celebrated feast days too. (Same source.)

Coming Up

What’s coming up for us and the church calendar? Well, I’m so glad you asked. Russ and I are planning on starting a new podcast to share about our adventures in being Church Calendar Curious. I’m planning on making more printable and activities. I want to make picture book recommendations. It’s all fluid. What would you like to hear about from us and the church calendar?

I want to hear from you.
